Limpet 1.0
A Tool to Automatically Extract OPML from NetNewsWire

Ever gotten frustrated that you can't seem to keep your RSS feeds in sync across different computers or even different operating systems? I sure have! That's why I wrote limpet.

Whether I'm on a PC running NewsGator or my TiBook running another copy of NetNewsWire, or even just wanting to share my current subscription list with friends and colleagues, I needed a tool that would automate the creation of an OPML file based on the data within NetNewsWire. So that's what this is.

Limpet is remarkably easy to use, but since it's a C source program, you'll need to compile it on your OSX box (which might mean that you need to install the developer tools included with your OSX distribution. I'm not sure, since I always install them anyway). There's a binary version included in the archive, but it's sure more fun to learn something new, isn't it?

You'll want to start by downloading the MySubscriptions.opml file (right click on the link and choose "Download Link to Disk"), updated nightly thanks to limpet, then import that into your favorite RSS reader and watch as, like magic, you can see what RSS feeds I track.

Once you're convinced that limpet would be useful to you, then create a "limpet" directory on your own system, download the entire package (10K total) and extract it into the new directory.

If you'd rather know what you're getting, you can peruse each of the files in the archive by clicking on the icons:

README   C source code icon   cron entry sample icon
Further directions can be found in Readme.txt, once you're ready to launch your Terminal.app program (in Applications / Utilities).
