Nerd's Life Liannis says (in part)

Mr. Taylor is an excellent teacher. As a computer-oriented individual, I have heard about permissions, and seen the mysterious permission symbols before. I've even read explanations of why the system is set up the way it is, but never really understood it until I read his explanation. Now, I completely understand how permissions work.

In addition to having a fine technical grasp of the material, he finds ways to make learning Unix, a task which many would find a chore, entertaining. He even provides you with a way to check your own knowledge. At the end of each chapter, there is a quiz that you can take. The answers to the quiz are scattered throughout the chapter you previously read, so if you don't know the answer you can go back and find it

Gotta have for new users!

Recently tasked with learning UNIX within a short period of time, I happened across this book. Previously I had no UNIX experience. Now, however, only ten lessons in I am well on my way and am impressed with the easy read and excellent source of information. I have already ordered another book in this line. A must for new users with little or no experience.

just the ticket

This is a great book. As one who hasn't seen UNIX in many years, this is a great way to get back into it. Very well-written.

Great book!

This book really helped me get the most out of the UNIX OS. I enjoyed it very much. Althought I don't have UNIX installed on my computer, I usually work on UNIX through a Shell Account, and this book really helped me understand what I was doing. Now I am going to try to install UNIX on my computer!

Excellent for Unix newbies!

Covers all basic and intermediate Unix commands, an explanation on what Unix is, where it originated from and how to find your way around using it. Also covers handy programs such as the VI editor and how to communicate with remote users on remote machines. This book covers enough to keep you busy for a couple of months, and is an excellent reference to have at hand.

Great Intro to Unix or Linux!

This was a great introduction to Unix systems. I originally purchased this book for my Linux system and it was great. At first I was not too sure about the 24hr books (they have a bad reputation) but this book is not one of them! From beginning to end it flawlessly covers everything in Unix (or Linux) you need to know to actually get working within 24hrs.

Very good book for a beginners, Lots of info.

I bought this book in hopes of brushing up on my UNIX skills and it worked out great. The book has clear explanations and easy examples. Check it out if you're trying to learn UNIX or brush up.

Simply a great book

No book can cover everything. However, what the authors attempt to cover in this book is done very well. They are not interested in showing you how smart they are as SOOO many technical manuals are. The authors give you a quick explanation of a topic then SHOW you the topic is action (very effective). Again, not everything is covered. You won't find a lot on shell scripts. However, what is there will allow you to understand some of the other books that are dedicated to this topic. They cover what they say they will and do it well. Definitely a five-star book!
